What is BV Rx?

The vagina is naturally an acidic environment, and contains a normal flora of organisms such as bacteria, which serve as a protective cover against overgrowth of normal flora or invasion from external organisms. Events that alter normal conditions such as sex, certain contraceptive methods, menstrual cycle, pregnancy, use of cosmetic/hygienic agents (shampoos or shaving creams), and douching, can interfere with the acidic environment or normal flora, causing severe inflammation of the vagina, often producing vaginal discharge. 

Vaginitis is an inflammation of the vagina that is typically triggered by bacteria, fungi, or parasites, and is characterized by irritation, itching, vaginal discharge with odor, and a burning sensation. The most common types include; bacterial vaginitis, trichomoniasis, and Vulvovaginal candidiasis. 

Bacterial vaginitis (BV) is caused by bacteria such as Gardnerella vaginalis, Mycoplasma hominis and anaerobic bacteria that cause the depletion of hydrogen peroxide–producing lactobacilli that characterize, and are essential for the normal vaginal flora. It is the most common cause of vaginal discharge. It is almost exclusively seen in sexually active women and is known to be a major risk factor for the acquisition of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). 

Various studies have reported that being African American is one of the main risk factors for acquiring BV.
